Instead of looking at how you provide good customer service,
think about how you might develop meaningful experiences with your
programming. I will explain. Look
through job sites such as CareerBuilder, Indeed and Monster.com for customer
service jobs and you will come across such titles as Customer Experience
Manager, Customer Experience Specialist or Customer Experience Director. Customer service, as a field, has
evolved. Now companies want to know how
you feel about their product. They want
to make your purchase decisions easy.
They want to keep you. So instead
of looking to improve customer service, many companies have moved forward with
the goal of creating a great customer experience. Two examples I can think of are shopping at
Wegmans or going to a theme park such as Disney World. <o:p></o:p></div>

This approach is also relevant to those of us who are recreation
professionals and work with older adults.
With increased competition from local library systems, post-secondary
institutions, senior living communities, mall and meet-ups, to name a few, it
is crucial that we find a way to differentiate ourselves. The way to highlight the important services
and programs we offer is to create experiences for our patrons. There is a lot of value in what we do every
day. Let me tell you about four amazing ways to bolster customer experience.<o:p></o:p></div>

A robust travel program is always going to add value to your
offerings. Here in Arlington, trips were
the first programs in the history of Arlington Senior Programs. Devoting as much time as you can to
developing a schedule of interesting places is going to be worth your while. If you are a one-person operation or even two
or three, it can be challenging. It’s
not insuperable however, because our own Senior Resource Group Chair - Cheryl
Wheeler and Member at Large - June Snead brought a Trips and Tours Workshop to
Berryville, VA. Attendees learned the
basics of planning quality trips from experts in the Travel and Tourism
industry. If you were not able to
attend, please contact <a href="mailto:cheryl.wheeler@loudoun.gov">Cheryl</a>

As a recreation professional working with older adults, you
know two things for certain.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One, there
had better be coffee ready and two you can always count on real time feedback
from your core patrons.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When it comes
time to turn in your quarterly reports that track attendance or the program
evaluation results on customer satisfaction surveys or volunteer hours, to name
a few; do you often think to yourself: <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>what am I doing this for? Does it go anywhere?
How am I supposed to fit this in with everything else?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Do I really need this to see how I am doing? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I know I know...what’s with all the questions?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sure, we all know that the data we provide at
the hands-on service level helps the folks who make the decisions about the
organization’s direction but collecting data and tracking it can also help you
with your programming decision.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It’s called
<a href="https://www.techopedia.com/definition/26418/data-analytics">data
analytics</a> and it can make your job more effective, successful and, yes,
less stressful. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For the next few months I have been assigned the task of
compiling the data that is produced by the senior centers in the organization I
work for.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It has been very interesting
to see how that data turns into information that tells a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/nicolemartin1/2018/11/01/data-visualization-how-to-tell-a-story-with-data/#7f38f1e84368">story</a>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Additionally, the information derived from
that data <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>it’s so objective that the
next steps are clear.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Some of the data
is mine; from my programs.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>While I would
enter the raw data and go back to analyze it; somehow seeing those same numbers
presented differently is more insightful. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Before you pass that data on, take a minute to
really look at it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In the field of data analytics there are models that can
tell you what happened in the past and then there are models that can help use
data to plan for the future. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>That is
where we should focus our efforts: on the future. Because in our field, the
landscape is changing rapidly. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>For
example, the data in the center I manage showsthat patrons <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>are no longer coming for one program and then
heading home.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>A significant number are
starting to stay longer.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Many are
without family nearby or have no family at all. Several have recently retired
and are looking for a place to go on a regular basis. So when I tell the story
of the center I talk about a place that people say feels like home.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We all know about the research pointing to the <a href="https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/02/140216151411.htm">negative
effects of loneliness</a> on older adults and the prevalence of <a href="https://www.nextavenue.org/elder-orphans-harder-aging-place/">older adult
orphans</a>. To build up on that feeling and foster community engagement, look
to your data.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It offers a clear path and
ability to make objective, impactful program decisions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Around the start of a new year, there are always a bunch of
challenges promoted by a variety of people. Most are related to fitness but I
have been a on quest to jump start my planning and programming. I decided to challenge myself to learn from
other creative fields. Here is what
happened:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I recently took a course from a friend of mine who has an
event planning business. About 40% of my
work involves planning small scale events such as talent shows, holiday parties
and the other 60% of my time is focused on creating experiences for older
adults who come to the community center I work in. Creating a positive experience is the goal
of any event whether it’s a party, conference, show or workshop. Additionally, my friend is an excellent
teacher and is well established in her field.
So, I registered for her online course: Goal setting for the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/theenlightenedcreative/">Enlightened Creative</a>. During
the workshop she encourages her students to get out of their comfort zones and
find new ways to grow professionally. I decided to give it a try. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I had been thinking about starting a drum circle in the senior center where I am
the director. Initially I felt
uncomfortable about organizing this sort of activity. It was certainly out of my comfort zone. Here’s why.
When I thought of drum circles I envisioned young (under 30) bohemian
types --or hippies-- engaged in rhythmic and frenetic drumming and dancing. Never mind that the original hippies are
rapidly becoming my customers. Never
mind that <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDeILrN8weE">drum circles</a>
exist in a variety of senior programs around the country. Never mind that Cheryl
Wheeler (the 2019 SRG chair) suggested it as a workshop for last year’s
conference and our Board Liaison Jane Shelhorse knew someone who lead drum
circle! I still wasn’t convinced. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I wasn’t convinced that a drum circle would garner any
interest from the participants that came to the Lee Senior Center. I didn’t see them as the sort of people who
would enjoy being in a drum circle. But
that bias rapidly dispatched at the VRPS 2018 conference in Henrico. I was sitting in one of the rooms learning
about a great neighborhood revitalization project in Danville, VA. In the room next to us was a session on an <a href="https://patch.com/virginia/leesburg/calendar/event/20170428/143373/loco-improv-festival">improv
fest for teens</a> in Loudon County. They
were very noisy and they were having lots of fun! The adults in the room were having lots of
fun. Making noise is quite fun. The little
lights started twinkling in my brain; maybe a drum circle would work. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I approached a gentleman who loves music and had been trying
to get his own band going. However, I
wasn’t completely sure, if he would be interested. Nonetheless I asked him if he would think
about starting a drum circle program. We
talked about it and even got a small focus group together to help develop the
program. I am happy to report that it’s
working out well. The participants who
attend are having a great time. The
volunteer dance instructors send some their rhythm challenged dancers to the
drumming session for extra help and the drum circle leader has even been asked
to talk to other groups about the benefits of drumming. This program hasn’t even been officially
promoted and it continues to grow. It’s
exciting!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This small foray out of my comfort zone affirmed several
things. The first is that being part of
VRPS and SRG is pivotal to my career and personal development. The second is nothing is more constricting to
your career than self- doubt. For example, after many months of hesitation, I
took the CPRP test and passed! I muscled
past the self-doubt. The third benefit
is that looking to other industries sparks innovation on an individual and
general level. Because when your day to
day tasks are geared to producing positive experiences for the community, do
not put limits on your creativity.</div>

<i>“To be happy in this world, especially when youth is past, it is necessary to feel oneself not merely an isolated individual whose day will soon be over, but part of the stream of life flowing on from the first germ to the remote and unknown future.”<br />Bertrand Russell </i></div>
<br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">I am certain we all agree that 99% of our work is involved in developing programs that bring people together. Something we all know is that quality of life is vastly improved when a person has the support of others, friends and professional providers. That’s why we read, brainstorm, attend conferences and network with each other -- to foster social connectedness for our customers. </span><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Social isolation and its effects on older adults has captured the attention of researchers and some advocacy groups. The most recent issue of The Gerontological Society of America’s Public Policy & Aging Report focuses on that topic. Loneliness increases the potential for health risks. To address this issue, AARP created </span><a href="https://connect2affect.org/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Connect2Affect</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">. This initiative draws on the research on social connectedness to create solutions and programs to address this public health issue. </span><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">If you work in an urban or suburban setting there are challenges to supporting social connectedness. Transportation, language and disability are some of the barriers that still keep older adults from socializing with others. For older adults living in rural areas the risks increase. </span><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">That is why we need to connect and learn from our Senior Resource Group colleagues who work in the rural parts of our state. Their creativity, passion and inventiveness is inspiring. </span><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><br style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;" /><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Meet Teresa Funkhouser. She is the Senior Services Program Supervisor for the Department of Parks and Recreation in Shenandoah County. One of her primary responsibilities is managing the </span><a href="https://shenandoahcountyva.us/parks/seniors/" style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Active Adult Fellowship</a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"> meetings, trips and programs for the active adult crowd. Building community, bringing people together through a common interest is pivotal to combatting social isolation in older adult.</span><div>

Held throughout Shenandoah County, these events vary. Sometimes they include a museum tour, other meetings might involve a community service project. Often members lead presentations on trips, hobbies or topics of general interest. <br /><br />Teresa has been a member of the Senior Resource Group and Virginia Parks and Recreation Society for nine years. Prior to working for Shenandoah County Parks and Rec, Teresa was a license insurance agent and customer service representative. Developing recreation programs for older adults is her encore career. “I have always loved the older generations and feel we can learn so much from them. I get great joy seeing them having a good time at our programs” Teresa tells me. <br /><br />Her population is most likely going to change in the next several years. Demographic trends are showing that older adults and retirees tend to move to areas that offer a lower cost of living and beautiful scenery. These retirees are often active and engaged in their communities. If they move to Shenandoah Valley, they should contact Teresa for additional information. <br /><br />Meeting and working with Teresa has been an honor. Her passion for working with older adults is palpable. How do you build community? We’d like to know.</span><div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is a new year, time to reflect on past accomplishments
and plan new goals for our careers. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For many of us, this may be the year to reach outside of our
comfort zone, do something that is not our typical behavior. In 2014, I took the step and set off to
develop my leadership skills with my peers.
Sure, I was attending yearly conferences and keeping up with CEU’s but
the thought of spending a couple of days on top of a mountain with people I did
not know was pretty much, a little intimidating. I can remember thinking; my career is going
pretty good, I achieved the ultimate opportunity of directing an aquatic
facility from the bottom up, could there really be anymore? Boy,
was there more! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It was time to attend a leadership training like no
other. That spring, up high on a
mountain top, I attended LTI. Needless
to say what I thought was going to be a couple of days in a typical recreation
setting became the emotional trigger I needed to remind myself why I was in the
field. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Witnessing first-hand 60 professionals just like myself stepping
outside their comfort zone to earn their leadership credentials was
amazing. From team building to more team
building, to connecting with some of the best leadership speakers, I was
in! What was happening? Not only did I want to be part of the team, I
was amazed how easy it was. Everyone was
happy, rejuvenated and a TEAM, so unbelievable that explaining would never do
the program justice. We became one, a
group of individuals seeking out the passion that was deep inside. For a short time we shut out the stress of
our daily routines to seek the next level within. No negative thoughts, just time to build
ourselves into the best possible leader in our field. Could it be possible that the serenity of
those two days surrounded by the beauty of nature would rejuvenate my career and
give spark to the internal flame of Parks and Recreation? After all, this was my passion! <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You bet it did!
Immediately, I knew the next goal was to serve on the LTI
committee. While serving the past four years,
I have witnessed your LTI committee continue to reach far beyond to bring you
the best recreational leadership training possible. The serenity on top of Wintergreen Mountain
is likely impossible to replace and the camaraderie of the team will fuel your
energy to be the best that you can be, not only in your field but during this
short time we have been given to “live”!
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<span style="color: #404040; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px;"><span style="color: #38761d; font-family: Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: medium;">
</span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Take the LTI opportunity now, it is time…you will not be
disappointed!</span><span style="font-family: times new roman;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 12pt;">In 2010 my supervisor
encouraged me to attend LTI. I decided to attend and loved every minute
of my time on the mountain. I met many new people in our field and was
able to learn many different team building skills and different ways to lead.
I had so much fun I attended again in 2012 and then decided I would like
to serve on the committee. I was accepted as a member of the planning
committee and have been involved in the 2014, 2016 and now the 2018 institute.
I have served as secretary and co-chair during my time on the committee.
During my time on the committee I was promoted twice at work. If
you have ever wondered if attending LTI would help you have better chances at
promotions, I feel I am an example that it can. LTI is a great
opportunity to meet new people and learn about yourself and your style of
leading. If you are debating attending the 2018 institute, I highly
recommend it.</span></div>

We all know someone who is an older adult and we all know how important
socializing and recreation are to our communities no matter what age. Lesha
Spencer-Brown, who wrote the blog agrees with us: “</span><span lang="EN" style="color: #111111; font-family: "arial" , "sans-serif"; mso-ansi-language: EN;">older
adults are the pillars of our communities. We cannot claim to improve community
health without factoring in the health of older adults and making them a
priority. Many programs and services currently offered for older adults need to
be more robust and address multiple factors that affect their health and
wellbeing.” This increased awareness is
probably a result of two things, the increased numbers of the retirees moving
into our areas and the awesome work we all do every day. As the risk of sounding cliché, I do believe
that we (recreational professionals who work with older adults) are turning a
corner. One way to continue the progress
is to keep the conversation going. What
recommendations would you give to the decision makers in your agency for
healthy aging initiatives that can be implemented in your agency today or in
the near future? <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Symbol;">·</span><span style="font-size: 7pt;"> <i> </i></span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><i>Share a specific moment in time when you knew coaching was
your passion.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">My first year coaching was not easy by any means. I was taking
over a team in its 3</span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;">rd </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">year and had to
establish myself with the dancers, parents, and administration. It was not
until our final competition of the season, Eastern Dance Association Nationals,
that I finally felt that this was my purpose. The team and I finally clicked;
the parents and I clicked… it just felt right. In 2010, I switched careers and
was commuting about 30 minutes each day to practice from my full time job. This
caused some stress ensuring I was giving my all to both positions. In 2016, my
commute changed to an hour to get to practice by 2:30pm. That’s when I knew I
had to make the decision to retire from coaching - probably one of the hardest
decisions I have had to make in my adult life… leaving a program that I have
spent so much time building, dancers that I love, and parents that I have gotten
close to. But it was time…</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Symbol;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Symbol;">·</span><span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><i>As both a coach and educator, what is the most fulfilling about
dance in your life....and in the lives of your dancers?</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New";">o</span><span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">In my life – To me, dance has allowed me to forget about
everything else in life… absolutely no worries. I focus on the music
and movement and nothing else.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Courier New";">o</span><span style="font-size: 7pt;"> </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">In the lives of my dancers – As a coach and educator, I built my team on the
foundation of student led choreography. Nothing brings me joy and/or
satisfaction more than when their vision comes to fruition… you see their eyes
light up and their own passion for dance grow.</span><br />

an important influence on you in becoming a coach?</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -76.5pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -9pt;">A big influence on becoming a coach myself was my
own high school experience. My high school team never had a consistent coach or
leadership. Each year we had a new sponsor or advisor take over the team and
the inconsistencies caused many issues that prevented the team from ever being
a true success.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -9pt;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -9pt;">When I left dance team
practice, I spent evenings at the studio DANCE ETC, where I had instructors who supported my development
and growth as a dancer. Each instructor influenced me in their own unique
way. One of the main takeaways was the ability to break down certain sections of routines </span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -12px;">or work from the back of the routine forward</span><span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif; text-indent: -9pt;">, rather than to just keep drilling an entire number. From these
instructors I learned many different ways to perfect routines and this is an
important part that I shared with my dancers.</span><br />

happens, happens. You can’t fix that performance but you can take feedback and

<span style="font-family: Calibri, sans-serif;">Slow down and enjoy the moments… you may think "wow, 10 years, that’s
a long time" and yes it was. But looking back those years flew by… I wish I
would have spent more time enjoying versus dwelling on any of the negativity
transitioning in as the new coach.</span><br />

the AmeriDance Brands, as well as other local high school
competitions in the Northern Virginia Area.</span><br />

feature of the CPRP certification is that in order to maintain that status, a

joining. If there are <a href="http://www.nrpa.org/certification/accreditation/coaprt/coaprt-accredited-academic-programs/">post-secondary
programs</a> related to the certification, then you are looking at a
certification program that is based on research and academic inquiry. There should also be ample opportunities for

exam guide is very detailed and user friendly.
Each area of knowledge is clearly explained with relevant examples. The first chapter talks about the pivotal role
communication plays in the field.
Relationships with customers, constituents and colleagues thrive when
the communication is clear, consistent and accurate. This helps bolster support
for programs and services that benefit the public. In-house, good communication fosters team
work, professionalism and camaraderie. It also covers other key categories of
the CPRP certification process such as finance, human resources, operations, and
programming. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif";">Now how does
this relate specifically to working with seniors? Well, the answer is- to a great extent! For anyone who attended the 2016 SRG
conference in Virginia Beach, there was consensus among the participants that
recreation programs for seniors are perceived to be less of a priority than
programs for teens or sports leagues.
However, as the keynote speaker <a href="https://www.lynchburg.edu/academics/academic-community-centers/beard-center-on-aging/denise-scruggs/">Dr.
Denise Scruggs</a> reminded us; we need to be the champions for our programs
and communicate their vital contributions to the community. This can be done by producing competent data
analysis and then effectively communicating that information to the public,
co-workers and ultimately the decision makers within the organization. When you go to advocate for your senior
programs, you will have more success if you present your case within the
framework recreation and park professionals will understand. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 12pt;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">The 2017 Virginia
Outdoors Survey (VOS) will assess Virginians’ attitudes about outdoor recreation
resources and estimate participation in and demand for a variety of
recreational activities. Results from the online survey will be compared to
those from a juried survey mailed to 14,000 households in Virginia. This
information will also enable DCR staff to assess differences in responses from
conservation and recreation advocates and the general public for the 2018
Virginia Outdoors Plan.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: windowtext;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Data
obtained from the VOS will assist planning based on regional and statewide

<br /></div>
<div class="Default" style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: windowtext;"><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">By
taking the online survey, you are assisting DCR and local providers in
determining where additional parks, recreational areas, and facilities are
needed. Some localities and planning regions may use survey results to prepare
both outdoor recreation and comprehensive plans, or they may use the
information as a basis for a more detailed local outdoor recreation survey.
Survey information will also help us identify ways to improve our state parks
system and protect Virginia’s natural and open space resources. </span><span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">When people think of intricately carved statues and
sculptures, massive marble monuments, towering columns and brilliantly colored
stained glass, they most likely visualize seeing these items in the long
hallways of a museum. To the surprise of many, seeing these treasures doesn’t
require membership to a museum or even tickets; these magnificent sights can be
found in your local cemetery. Unfortunately, the art that exists so prominently
in cemeteries goes largely unnoticed. Since most traffic in cemeteries occurs during
burial services, many people never have the opportunity to appreciate – let
alone notice – the wide variety of beauty in cemeteries. The Cemeteriescape
Photography Contest and Exhibit has changed that reality. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Sponsored by the non-profit organization Norfolk
Society for Cemetery Conservation (NSCC), Cemeteriescape invites people to
visit local cemeteries in Hampton Roads and embark on a creative survey of
cemeteries. Void of many technical and stylistic restrictions, the contest
rules allow contestants to enjoy a great deal of freedom of expression. Whether
using a cell phone or traditional camera, contestants can snap pictures of
anything in the cemetery that they deem worthy of recognition. Now in its fourth year, the contest continues
to draw interest from amateur and professional photographers alike. With nearly
100 entries, this year’s judges were tasked with selecting winners for four
winning categories; Best in Show, Second Place, Third Place and Board Choice.
The recipient of the first place award – Best in Show – earns the highly
coveted prize of $1,000. Although the
official contest ends with the judges’ decisions, Cemeteriescape continues with
a large exhibit of all contestants’ entries during the reception. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The impact of Cemeteriescape goes beyond simply
highlighting the beauty of local cemeteries. For many contestants, the contest created
a fun and quite unusual opportunity for an outing. For Melody Agnew, the real
award was quality time with family. Agnew commented, “At first I was sad I
didn’t win, but then I realized that I did because I had a great time with my
son taking these pictures!” This type of participation is reminiscent of the
way cemeteries were once used. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, cemeteries
were not only places of burial, they served as gathering places for extracurricular
activities. Unlike in more modern times, destinations for fun and past times
were scarce. While the thought of dining in a cemetery would most likely draw
ire today, it was very common to see scores of people picnicking in large,
picturesque cemeteries such as Dayton, Ohio’s Woodland Cemetery. For this
reason, people frequented cemeteries – sometimes considered outdoor museums –
for a host of activities including carriage races, leisurely strolls, reading,
knitting and even hunting, when the landscape permitted it. Although such
activities are certainly characteristic of a bygone era, today cemeteries coast
to coast still provide creative opportunities for leisure. Cinespia at the Hollywood
Forever Cemetery in Santa Monica, California for example, is a popular movie screening
event that has at times, attracted up to 4,000 moviegoers. Likewise,
Congressional Cemetery in Washington D.C. has become such a favorite
destination for its pet friendly policies that it has a waiting list for its
dedicated dog park program.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 107%;">The Norfolk Bureau of Cemeteries, a division of the
Department of Recreation, Parks and Open Space, wants to see a resurgence of
similar non-invasive activities. The division continuously identifies ways to increase
public interest in non-burial related activities in Norfolk’s eight municipal
cemeteries, which are considered to be open space. The
Bureau of Cemeteries meets this objective by supporting a variety of NSCC’s
special events such as Cemeteriescape, volunteer workdays, walking tours, as
well as holiday memorial services through its public-private partnership with the
non-profit. Though these special events have many exciting elements that
attract participation, their foremost purpose is to raise awareness about the
importance of conservation, education and advocacy for Norfolk’s cemeteries. With
six of its eight cemeteries established before 1900, the City of Norfolk is
dedicated to preserving both the memories of the people of Norfolk and the rich
history of the city. For more information on how you can contribute to preserving
Norfolk’s cemeteries, visit <a href="http://www.norfolksocietyforcemeteryconservation.org/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue;">www.norfolksocietyforcemeteryconservation.org</span></a>.

hones in on the way negative ways society describes aging, whether in
conversation, writing or advertising. It
seemed time to bring the conversation to the senior center where I work. Engaging with participants about how older
Americans can be agents of change regarding the negative perceptions that surround
getting older would be a great start.</span></div>

I wrote the description for the discussion and submitted it for
publication. We were going to talk,
learn from each other and affirm our changing demographics. People were living longer and that was a good
thing. I was looking forward to being part of a meaningful discussion. Here is
a description of the program:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The write-up produced a reaction I did not expect. An
irate call came shortly after the program guide starting arriving in the mail.
A citizen read my write-up and came to the conclusion that I was supportive of
ageism. This person called the place
where the presenter worked, the Senior Center and gave everyone (including my
supervisor) who happened to be on the other end of the phone the “what for”. The situation was made worse because I was
out of town and never got a chance to speak to this individual. I did get a blow by blow account (from more
than one person) of the interaction. It was torturous. This is crazy, I thought. I carefully crafted this write-up. But, in
the end, my message backfired. What happened? <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Well, there were many things I didn’t include in the
write up. The Frameworks Institute, a non-profit that looks at how
communication relates to how social policies are discussed, developed a <a href="http://frameworksinstitute.org/toolkits/aging/"><span style="color: blue;">tool-kit to talk about aging</span></a>. They compare public thinking to a swamp because
something can come out of nowhere and attack you unless you learn to anticipate
how your message may be perceived. Yup.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

those of us who work with the 55 plus population trek through the swamp of
public thinking every day. Our purpose
in the recreation field is to create different programs that will engage and
encourage regular participation in a demographic that is at risk for social
isolation. The challenge is that we
interact with an incredibly diverse population in terms of age difference,
education, experiences and cultures.

anyone who works with volunteers will agree that they are the reason the
program is a success; the work gets done; they are backbone of the organization

the daily grind without them. The
benefits are reciprocal because volunteering also has a positive impact on the
volunteer in a variety of ways.
According to <a href="https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/blog/2015/07/09/benefits-volunteering-seniors-and-our-nation">research</a>
conducted by the Corporation for National and Community Service “older

life such as social, physical, emotional health. For example, older adults who had few
opportunities for social interactions in their lives found that volunteering
increased their opportunities for friendship and the socializing helped to
improve their self-perception. This same study connected social health to
improved emotional and physical health. I
would suggest that keeping these ideas in mind may also help us manage our

<br />
In my position at VRPS Central Office, I love watching the evolution of <a href="http://vrps-on-the.blogspot.com/2013/02/52-ways-to-use-your-vrps-membership.html" target="_blank">service areas</a> and resource groups from year-to-year, and in particular, their stellar efforts at growth. It seems that in July, when we're putting together resource group and service area ballots for the following year (<a href="http://www.vrps.com/Portals/0/Files/Documents/Calendar%20Guidelines.pdf" target="_blank">yes, it starts in July</a>), that we were just starting to get a groove going with the current year boards.<br />
<br />
However, I am seeing greater transition between the two teams - the current and oncoming ones. There is less "starting over" and more "picking up where we left off".<br />
<br />
For example, <a href="http://www.vrps.com/AboutUs/ResourceGroups/SeniorResourceGroup.aspx" target="_blank">Senior Resource Group</a> is holding call-in meetings, formulating a theme-driven effort for the year, and <a href="http://vrps-on-the.blogspot.com/2017/03/dancing-for-heart-and-mind.html" target="_blank">blogging</a>. <a href="http://www.vrps.com/AboutUs/ResourceGroups/AquaticsResourceGroup.aspx" target="_blank">Aquatics Resource Group</a> is hosting GoTo meetings, employing creative methods to expand their reach, and qualifying themselves to be a go-to resource in Virginia for aquatics training. And, several of the event committees are charting new territory as well, into the world of webinars and Google docs and apps and WebEx.<br />
<br />
Recently, under the guidance of Chair Heather Grubb (Special Events Coordinator, Henrico County Recreation and Parks), the <a href="http://www.vrps.com/AboutUs/ServiceAreas/CentralServiceArea.aspx" target="_blank">Central Service Area</a> has initiated its own <a href="https://centralsa.wordpress.com/2017/03/14/whats-in-a-blog/" target="_blank">blog</a>.<br />
<br />
So, in a sense, this is a blog about a blog. Central Service Area is employing some newer "talent" (i.e. what some of us would consider professionals on the more youthful side) to reach a wider audience and highlight their objectives.<br />
<br />
2017 is off to a great start!<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">It’s time to start talking about dancing. Why? Well so many of us work with participants
who are crazy about dancing. Most of all, because it’s fun and being
ambassadors of fun is one of the many hats we wear. If you’re looking to add extra pizazz to your
programming, consider more dance. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">According to a Harvard Mahoney Neuroscience Institute
Letter, dance is one of those activities that exercises both the <a href="http://neuro.hms.harvard.edu/harvard-mahoney-neuroscience-institute/brain-newsletter/and-brain-series/dancing-and-brain"><span style="color: blue;">brain and body</span></a>. Learning new steps or patterns activates the
neurons and moving to music moves your body.
There are also the benefits that are gained from listening to <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/psychology-workout-music/"><span style="color: blue;">music when exercising</span></a>.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">For those of you who love the science of things,
dancing improves motor function, memory, spatial recognition and increases
endorphin levels. Dance is also utilized
as a way to treat neurological disorders such as <a href="http://danceforparkinsons.org/"><span style="color: blue;">Parkinson’s</span></a>
disease. On the social and big picture
side, a whole group of people moving to music, smiling and having a great time
is always a wonderful sight to see.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Scheduling any type of partner dance program always
brings with it the challenge of one gender outnumbering the other. That’s why <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rf6XdSHZlwI"><span style="color: blue;">line
dancing</span></a> is a perfect choice.
No partner necessary! The music
that accompanies a line dance can be as varied as the choreography. Country western, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rY0MVXrMZhs"><span style="color: blue;">Motown</span></a> or <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDEsZiKrF9s"><span style="color: blue;">popular dance music</span></a> are all good
choices. The complexity of the dance can
also vary according to the level of the people doing the dances. The most important thing is that everyone can
dance.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Of course, there are some sticky details to
consider. I have on one occasion or two
blindly set up a line dance event only to be flummoxed by the different
definitions of dance levels. To me a
beginner dance is for someone who barely knows their right foot from their
left. That’s not quite right
apparently. There are several levels:
beginner, beginner-beginner, just
getting started beginner, dance newbie (different from beginner-beginner) and
new beginner. I gave up before I could
even get to the next level! That’s where
having a season line dance teacher comes in handy. They tell you what level, steps and music are
involved.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , "sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">After all that, I still believe that if you want to improve
your fun credentials, you can’t go wrong with including several line dance
programs. You might even want to
organize a line dance party! Speaking of
parties, we’re still hoping to coordinate a state-wide line dance event. What line dance levels does your center
offer? What’s the most popular types of music?
Let us know.</span><br />

just finished the <a href="http://www.vrps.com/EducationEvents/Webinars.aspx" target="_blank">VRPS Awards webinar</a>.

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">We have already published
<a href="http://vrps-on-the.blogspot.com/2016/12/by-mark-furlo-cprp-director-portsmouth.html" target="_blank">blogs about the awards process</a>, the ways to submit, even the amount of work
that is represented in the number of submissions. That’s not what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is much more fun,
and much more important for the Awards committee. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">I drive a lot through the
state. The Aquatics Resource Group keeps me moving to different trainings,
roundtables and meetings. The best part
about serving on the Awards Committee has been recognizing some of the amazing
places and events that this state has to offer.
I am very proud to work for the Fairfax County Park Authority, and the
renovation at the Watermine Family Swimming Hole is amazing and HUGE, but I
will never drive through Staunton without thinking about "<i>Irish Road Bowling</i>", go
through Henrico county without thinking to myself “<i>it’s pronounced Hen-Rye-Co</i>”,
or see public art without wishing I could get down to Danville to walk the art
trail.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif"; font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 107%;">The awards are not just
about the plaque or the picture; it truly is about the excitement, the spirit
and the pride that goes into projects all around the state. I admit I have a soft spot for the small
departments, the rural locations, and the shoestring budgets that bring such
amazing programs and facilities to the people of this state. As we go into another award season, please
make sure you are letting your passion show in your applications, but more
importantly know that we truly are making a difference.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
